African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) larvae were fed on five preparations of decapsulated Great Salt Lake Artemia cysts: 1) dried (35°C, 6 h) and UV-irradiated cysts; 2) heated cysts (80°C, 10 min); 3) brine dehydrated and UV irradiated cysts; 4) micro-bound diet 1(with intact decapsulated cysts used in diet preparation 1); and 5) micro-bound diet 2 (with crushed and shifted decapsulated diet used in diet preparation 1). The larvae were fed from the first day after yolk-sac resorption (fourth day after hatching). After a 14-d rearing period, larvae fed on dried or heated decapsulated cysts or micro-bound diet 1. Feeding micro-bound diet 2 resulted in a significantly lower average gain in weight as compared to the other... |

A new test system is described for the evaluation of toxic levels of liposoluble products in the aquatic food chain using Artemia and Mysidopsis bahia (M.) as experimental animals. For this, freshly released juveniles (<24h old) of M. bahia are transferred to the experimental bioassay test system, cultured under standard conditions and fed 24h old purposely contaminated Artemia nauplii. After 11 days, data on survival, reproductive characteristics, individual length and dry weight are recorded and treated statistically. |

A simple semi flow-through Artemia culture unit is described for possible integration in marine fish and shellfish hatcheries as a source of a cheap nursery diet. The system does not require the use of feeding pumps and involves minimal care. Food preparation and addition to the feeding tank is reduced to one or two manipulations per day during the meta-nauplius stages (day 1-3) and the juvenile stages (day 4-14), respectively. Biomass productions are superior to those reported to those for stagnant culture systems and are comparable to those demonstrated for flow-through culture units. This simple rearing technique offers the possibility of producing brine shrimp populations with a uniform size. Furthermore, by varying the feeding... |

A stress test is proposed for the evaluation of the physiological condition of fish larvae in nutritional studies. The test was used in a study of quantitative (n-3) highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA) requirements in larval Lates calcarifer and Siganus guttatus. It enabled to suggest fast intervention at reduced larval quality and allowed to prevent mass mortalities. The stress test offered valuable information for the quantification study of fatty acid requirements in marine fish larvae. In Lates demands for fatty acids were detected in metamorphosis. In Siganus on the other hand, the sensitivity of the larvae was considerably reduced after short (n-3) HUFA boosting of the... |

A standard experimental diet was developed to study lipid nutrition in marine fish larvae during weaning and first ongrowing. Basal diets were prepared by extrusion-cooking, crumbling of the pellets, and sieving to obtain particles in the size ranges 150-300 µm and 300-500 µm. Three protein sources in the extruded basal diet were evaluated: (1) micronized cod protein granulate (COD); (2) a mixture of casein, gelatin, and albumin (CGA); (3) a mixture of cod fish meal, whey protein, soybean protein concentrate, albumin, hemoglobin meal, and wheat gluten (MIX). A variable lipid fraction was added to the extruded nucleus by coating the particles with an emulsion, coconut oil (COCO), or fish oil emulsion (FO), in a fluidized bed granulator. European sea bass... |

In a previous paper (H.J. Nelis, P. Léger, P. Sorgeloos, and A.P. De Leenheer, Antimicrob. Agents Chemother. 35:2486-2489, 1991) it was reported that two selected antibacterial agents, i.e. trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole, can be efficiently bioencapsulated in nauplii of the brine shrimp Artemia franciscana for administration to fish. This follow-up study showed that larvae of the sea bass and the turbot as well as postlarvae of the white shrimp accumulate the therapeutic agents in high quantities when fed medicated A. franciscana. To monitor their levels as a function of time, the liquid chromatographic method originally developed for the analysis of A. franciscana was modified... |

1. A simple cylindrical hatching and separator box is described for Artemia salinanauplii (and other phototactic invertebrates), in which the "corner seeking effect" responsible for poor separation is avoided, and from which nauplii can be recovered very conveniently. 2. Separation is achieved by partly unscrewing an internal and closed cylinder from its fixed counter-part glued to the bottom of the box, till two slits are freed through which the nauplii migrate from the darkened internal hatching cylinder into the illuminated exterior compartment. Rescrewing the former cylinder separates the larvae from debris and unhatched eggs. |

Automatization in the food distribution is necessary for the controlled culturing of filter feeders in high densities. Numerous devices have been described to distribute specific quantities of food suspension at preset time intervals (cf. review in Kinne, 1977). The number of systems which, however, add food whenever a preset critical turbidity of the medium is exceeded are rather limited. They furthermore are either very expensive (sophisticated equipment) or have to be cleaned very often (cf. review in Sorgeloos et al., 1976). We tried to simplify the technological complexity of the existing systems and developed an inexpensive, automatic, self cleaning food distributor. This apparatus measures the turbidity of the culturing medium which is pumped into a... |

The larval stage is regarded to be the main bottleneck of halibut production. Halibut eggs were obtained from captive broodstock both by stripping and by natural spawning. Artificial photoperiods were used to increase the total spawning season. Yolk sac larvae are presently produced either in small stagnant units or in large flow through systems. A major consideration is to avoid stress of the larvae, caused by mechanical disturbances of the larvae and by high bacterial load or high ammonia levels in the water. The experimentation showed that halibut larvae began to ingest algae earlier than rotifers Brachionus sp. Supplementation of algae to first feeding tanks resulted in enhanced survival and growth rate of the larvae. Both rotifers... |

Biometrical, biochemical and food-value characteristics of Artemia nauplii vary with the source of the cyst material. In order to facilitate intercalibration and/or comparison of research conducted with cysts from different sources, homogenous cyst material can now be obtained from the Artemia Reference Center (State University of Ghent, J. Plateaustraat 22, B-9000 Ghent, Belgium). The reference cysts have been tested extensively for hatching characteristics, biometrics, fatty-acid content, pesticide contamination and effectiveness as larval food for various crustaceans and fishes. |

In this study baker's yeast was evaluated as a substitute for live Dunaliella tertiolecta algae in the culture of the brine shrimp Artemia . Consumption of fresh baker's yeast resulted in poor growth and survival of brine shrimp. However, the nutritional value of the yeast significantly improved after complete removal of the yeast cell wall by enzymatic treatment. Baker's yeast was also made digestible for Artemia by simple chemical treatment which did not reduce rigidity of the yeast cell. The external mannoprotein layer of the yeast cell wall is probably the major barrier to digestion by Artemia . Chemically treated baker's yeast offers promising possibilities as a substitute for... |
